2012 Oscar for Best Animated Picture - Winner and Snub

2012’s Oscar winner for best animated picture was the film Rango directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Johnny Depp. This film has won quite a few awards for this category in other award shows however I happen to disagree with it winning. While the animation, character designs and all the other things it takes to make a CG film work where wonderfully done, I feel the story was greatly lacking. The movie for me was quite boring and uninteresting over all, when the film was over I was not sad to leave the theater at all. I also found it mildly disturbing for a film marketed to children, some may disagree and maybe I’m a tad sensitive but when a movie actively shows an animal getting run over by a car with in the opening minutes even as an adult woman I am frightened, I certainly would not what my child (assuming I had one) seeing that.

This years Oscars in my opinion snubbed a marvelous film in this category that I think would have won if it had been nominated, as it had previously won the Golden Globe for this category it surely would have taken the Oscar. The film was The Adventures of Tintin directed by Steven Spielberg. This film featured some of the most flawless motion capture I have seen in a long time and while mo-cap has had a bumpy start and taken many years to get right I feel this film was the one to finally do it. The story as well was wonderfully written and brilliantly executed. I was enthralled during this film and did not want it to end, I was even a little sad when the credits started rolling that the movie was over. I had wanted more, it was amazing. It was also as child friendly as it was marketed to be. I find it ridiculous that Dreamworks Puss in Boots got on the ballot for this years Oscar when The Adventures of Tintin did not. Tintin’s story and animation was dozens of times better then Puss and Boots and certainly better then Rango.
